Description

Accutane (generic name: Isotretinoin; brand names: Amnesteem / Claravis / Decutan / Isotane / Sotret / Oratane / Roaccutane / Izotek) is a retinoid (a vitamin A derivative).

Accutane is a powerful medicine used for the treatment of moderate to severe acne.

Is also used for acne present for many years that has not responded completely to antibiotic pills and creams. Accutane is very effective for nearly all types of breakouts. No other acne medicine works as well for severe acne.

Accutane was discovered in 1979 when it was first given to patients with severe acne, most of whom reacted with dramatic and permanent clearing of their acne symptoms.

It was originally prescribed for people with severe acne that did not respond to other treatments, but has gained in popularity in the past years and is prescribed more and more frequently for less severe acne.

Three to five months of Accutane treatment usually leads to clearing of acne.

Accutane works by reducing skin oil production, changing the characteristics of the skin oil, and preventing abnormal hardening of the skin.

It affects all of the four ways that acne develops:

1. It dramatically reduces the size of the skin's oil glands (35%-58%) and even more dramatically reduces the amount of oil the skin produces (around 80%).

2. Acne bacteria (P. Acnes) lives in skin oil. Since oil is so dramatically reduced, so is the amount of acne bacteria in the skin.

3. It also slows down how fast the skin produces skin cells inside the pore which helps pores from becoming clogged in the first place.

4. It displays anti-inflammatory properties.

Accutane works to achieve complete or partial clearance of acne in about 95% of people who complete a cycle, regardless of whether they have inflammatory or non-inflammatory acne.

Recommendations

Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Take Accutane exactly as directed.

Accutane is a serious medication which must be taken under close doctor's supervision.

Take Accutane by mouth with food.

Swallow the capsule with a full glass of water or other liquid. Do not break, crush, chew, or suck on the capsule before swallowing. This will help prevent the medication inside the capsule from irritating your throat.

For best results, take Accutane regularly. Taking Accutane at the same time each day will help you remember to take it. Sometimes, acne can get worse at the start of treatment, but this should resolve in 7 - 10 days.

It is very important that women taking Accutane do not get pregnant. Contraception is needed at least 1 month before starting treatment, during treatment, and for at least 1 month after stopping treatment.

Do not take vitamin supplements that contain vitamin A whilst taking Accutane.

If you miss a dose of Accutane, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Accutane.

Store Accutane in a cool, dry place, away from direct heat and light.

Precautions

Before taking Accutane, tell your doctor if:

Accutane User Reviews

It made my interstitial cystitis flare up very badly...I just peed out a chunk of my bladder lining. Works great for the acne if you are willing to put up with the horrible side effects.

I was on Accutane 15 years ago. The side-effects were horrible - every part of my body was incredibly dry and cracked. I was very depressed but I thought it was due to the acne (I would call in sick because I didn't want anyone to be repulsed by my face) and the dryness I experienced with the medication. Within a few months, nothing mattered other than that my skin was clearing up. I was on the Accutane for six months and, since then, I have had less than five flare-ups (meaning a pimple that is gone the next day). My advice - make sure your dermatologist refers to the iPledge Program and follows the instructions to the letter. If you are unsure about anything or have any questions/concerns, talk to your doctor before taking the medication! Depression can be a major complication - and the defects to a fetus can be horrendous and devastating. With that said, I would take Accutane in a heartbeat if it became necessary again...

Worked pretty darn well I took Accutane (amnesteem) for 9 months. I started on 30mg 1x a day, then increased to 2x a day. It really cleared up my skin a lot, and I have barely had even one pimple, blackhead, or whitehead since going off of it. My skin is much less oily as well. The negative side of this was the side effects, and they were TERRIBLE. My lips, eyes, face, and inside of my nose were dry for the entire course of the treatment. I had to constantly put vaseline in my nose or eyedrops in my eyes. I also got severely depressed, but then again I have always been depressed so its hard to say which it was. And towards the end of the treatment I started to get a ringing in my ears, which went away once I stopped taking it. All in all it was worth the side effects.

Treat yourself I've had acne since I was 25 and was able able to control it with oral antibiotics and differn. It improvd a lttle as I got older, but never went away. I finally found a sympatheic Derm who agreed to put me out of my misery and prescibe Sotret. He calls it a miracle drug and I just hope he's right. So far things have been good w/ just small, surface pimples that go away quickly and don't scar. Don't be afraid!! I had post-partum depression after my second pregnancy, and went through a short period of treatment w/ Paxil. I felt no signs of depression during Sotret therapy. My hair looked awesome and my body felt great (I work out a lot). Just be aware of the worsening. It was crazy and painful, but it only lasted about 6 weeks. Just go to your Derm a lot for injections.
