Cozaar is used to treat high blood pressure. It also reduces the progression of diabetic nephropathy. It is effective when used on its own or with other high blood pressure medication such as diuretics.

Description

Cozaar (generic name: losartan potassium; brand names include: Los-Pot) belongs to a new group of medicines, called angiotensin II receptor antagonists.

Cozaar is the only medicine in its class proven to lower the chance of stroke.

Cozaar is used:

alone or with other blood pressure medicines to lower high blood pressure (hypertension);
to lower the chance of stroke in patients with high blood pressure and a heart problem called left ventricular hypertrophy;
to slow the worsening of diabetic kidney disease (nephropathy) in patients with type 2 diabetes who have or had high blood pressure.

In type 2 diabetic patients with protein in the urine, Cozaar has been shown to reduce the need for dialysis or kidney transplantation.

Cozaar is not addictive.

Recommendations

Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Take Cozaar exactly as directed.

Cozaar is generally taken once daily.

Take Cozaar at about the same time each day. Taking your tablet(s) at the same time each day will have the best effect. It will also help you remember when to take the tablets.

Swallow Cozaar with a glass of water or other liquid. It does not matter whether you take Cozaar before or after food.

Continue taking Cozaar for as long as your doctor prescribes.

If you miss a dose of Cozaar, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to your next dose, do not take the missed dose. Just take the next dose at your regular time.

Keep Cozaar at room temperature. Protect from light.

Precautions

Before taking Cozaar, tell your doctor if:

you are allergic to any medicines;
you have kidney or liver disease;
you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

losartan 100mg for some reason gives me relief with my back problem i am in pain with my back a lot when i take this medication it helps why i do nto know. i had a heart attack june 20, 2006 and had three artery blocked the two artery in front of my heart was easy to clear but the artery in the back was hard. after the heart attack my back pain easy up a lot like i had some kind of blockage a circulation blockage problem. it also easy the pain when i take some cholestor medication or an asprin i mention this to my doctor

I was diagnosed with high blood pressure (145/90) over 10 years ago, a few years after experiencing early menopause. Severe headaches were also commmon. First treatment: dietary changes and increasing daily exercise--not adequate; in fact, it increased. I was prescribed Cozaar, 50 mg/day, with the reminder that the first dosage tried was rarely the correct one. In my case, it was and I get checked now every 6 months. My blood pressure stays around 118/70 range.
