Description

Seroquel (generic name: quetiapine; brand names include: Qutipin / Ketipinor) belongs to a group of medicines called atypical anti-psychotics.

Seroquel is used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depression, in adult patients. Seroquel can help you to keep in touch with reality, stabilize the mood, and reduce your mental problems.

Seroquel is approved for the treatment of depressive and acute manic episodes in bipolar disorder and for long-term maintenance treatment of bipolar disorder in combination with other medications.

Patients taking Seroquel in a clinical trial reported an improvement with a variety of schizophrenia symptoms, including so-called positive and negative symptoms.

Seroquel works by changing the activity of certain natural substances in the brain.

This medication may be prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Recommendations

Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure about anything. Take Seroquel exactly as directed.

Seroquel is taken once or twice a day. Your doctor may adjust your total daily dose between 150mg and 800mg a day depending on your individual treatment and needs. Some people may need more or less than this. Your dose will depend on your response.

Swallow your Seroquel tablets whole with a full glass of water. You can take them before or after food.

Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Do not stop taking Seroquel without first talking to your doctor. Your doctor will probably want to decrease your dose gradually.

If you miss a dose of Seroquel, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed. Patients over age 65 years may have a stronger reaction to this medicine and need smaller doses.

Keep your tablets at room temperature. Do not store Seroquel tablets or any other medicine in the bathroom or near a sink. Do not leave Seroquel tablets in the car on hot days.

Precautions

Tell your doctor before taking Seroquel, if you:

are allergic to any medicines;
have heart problems and/or low blood pressure; or have had a stroke;
have problems with your circulation; liver problems; diabetes or high blood sugar;
have ever had a seizure (fit);
are pregnant or breast-feeding.

Ingredients

Active ingredient: quetiapine fumarate.

Seroquel User Reviews

I like Seroquel, but... I switched to Seroquel from Zyprexa, after trying many adjunct meds and not feeling like myself. The Seroquel plus 5mg of Celexa has helped me, as I am also Bipolar. The problem is that I have lost some weight from the switch, and with a history of anorexia, my doctors are concerned. I like Seroquel a lot, but it's frustrating to lose weight because of a med when you're scrutinized for every ounce your body loses. Hopefully, my weight will stabilize, and I can stay on Seroquel. It has really helped my moods and outlook to become more consistent and realistic.

Make sure you time it right I take it to counteract insomnia side effects from my day meds. I also have Restless Leg Syndrome. It takes exactly one hour to kick in, so I have to remember to take it way before I'm ready for bed. I usually don't and have to wait around for it to kick in, but when it does, I'm zonked. It has helped me with my night spasms as well (I thrash my limbs around enough to wake myself up). Not good for people with unpredictable or inconsistent bed times (if you don't want to have to wait around for it to kick in, because if you're like me, you'll usually forget.)

Seroquel is what gives me peace Outside of HUGE weight gain!!! I have been on a range of 25 to 200 mg of this med. At 200 I was a mess. Today after 1 year I am down to 50mg. It is my lifeline for clear thinking. I sleep for the fist time in years. I have dropped 8lbs in a week from reducing the mgs. Amazing!

The side affects were hard to get used to at first. It took time to adjust to the meds. Taking Topamax (100mg) along with Seroquel. This combination has stabilized my moods to a normal, clear, productive life! Anxiety is down to a minimum. If life gets crazy (thoughts) I can take a 25 mg Seroquel. Far be it from me to fight a drug that works. I have fought this PTSD for to many years and finally this combination has worked for me. I am honest with my doctor and clearly define the pros and cons of the meds. I hated the groggy or foggy feeling of the higher dosage of Seroquel. I don't tolerate Meds well. She was very willing to allow me to adjust my meds to "what works". One thing is my Chlosterol is soooooooooo high right now. Scares me! Now I have to go in for this.

My son is autistic and adhd. He has been taking this medication for 5 years, starting with 75mg a day. The only downside is the increased eating. This is offset in him with the adhd meds he takes, as they decrease the appetite. He will not sleep without seroquel.
