Description

Soma (generic name: carisoprodol; brand names include: Carimax / Sanoma / Carisoma) is a muscle relaxant used to treat pain caused by muscle spasms.

It is indicated as an adjunct to rest, physical therapy, and other measures for the relief of discomfort associated with acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions in patients 12 years of age and above.

Soma works to relax the muscles by blocking pain messages sent to the brain. The ingredient Carisoprodol is a pain reliever that changes the way a body senses pain. The onset of action is rapid and lasts four to six hours.

Soma is useful against various types of pain (whether or not related to muscle spasm).

Soma may be prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Recommendations

Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand.

Soma is taken orally. Usually it is taken three times daily and at bedtime and may be taken with or without food. The usual adult dosage of soma is one 350 mg tablet, three times daily and at bedtime.

Usage in patients under age 12 is not recommended. It is recommended that you take Soma with food, or with milk, to minimize the likelihood that you will suffer an upset stomach as a result of taking the medication.

If you forget to take Soma, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Store this medicine at controlled room temperature 20 to 25 C.

Precautions

Tell your doctor before taking Soma, if:

you are allergic to carisoprodol, meprobamate (Equanil, Meprospan, Miltown, Neuramate), or any other drugs;
you have or have ever had kidney or liver disease;
you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.

Ingredients

Active ingredient: carisoprodol.

Soma reviews/feedback

Soma patient!: I have shoulder spasms frequently and nothing else worked. I have a toddler and Flexeril just made me very tired with no relief. Soma has made it possible for me to enjoy my activities of daily living again with my toddler.

on Soma:Soma (carisoprodol) 350mg has been the best muscle relaxer that my Doctor has ever given me and I have tried them all. They are not coated, a bit hard to swallow and taste absolutly awful but are very worth these setbacks. They don't upset me even when taken on an empmty stomach. I would highly recommend speaking with your Doctor on trying this medication as it has been a wonder drug for me. I take it with Tramadol (for pain) and the combination has worked better for me than Vicodin.

Anonym: I have been on narcotics and different types of muscle relaxers for over two years now for chronic back pain. I just started taking Soma as a last resort and wow am I glad I decided to give it a shot. To date I have more relief from the Soma then from the previous narcotics that I was taking. Its amazing and I am thankful.

Maratini 55: Very, very offlabel, but I found by accident (no pun intended -- I pulled a back muscle) when I was prescribed Soma for pain that it also significantly enhanced my mood. As I am bipolar I with very refractory symptoms, my psychiatrist suggested I try Soma for a month for that purpose. I have been on it (as well as ritalin) as adjunct therapy to lamictal, cymbalta, and abilify. It's success, in my opinion, has been remarkable.

Martin: Soma is a non-narcotic that allieviates pain and allows me to fall asleep. I can't take narcotics because I'm in drug court and that's just not allowed. I like Soma and take it twice a day as ordered.

Anonym: I had a fall had a rotator cuff muscle tear along with mid-thoracic and cervical pain. I've also had a headache since the fall. The doctor first prescribed me Skelaxin, which did nothing for me except make me sick. I finally got an RX for 350 mg of Soma that I cut in half. I noticed right away the relaxing effects of the medication on my muscles.

User Reviews

I suffered from cycles of mild to moderate depression all my life. Eventually, the depression combined with anxiety. After reading the book "The Mood Cure," I tried 5-HTP. It said in the book to start with 50mg, but the supplement I bought came only in 100mg tablets (I bought it at Walmart: 30 Tablets for ca. $ 13.00). I started taking one 100mg pill before bedtime and I had the best night's sleep in years. It started relaxing me and within a half hour or so, I was soundly asleep. It does give me some vivid dreams, which is a side effect I can definitely deal with, and I wake up refreshed in the morning, in a good mood and ready to start my day. It really has been a life saver. I have been taking it for a couple of months now, but will stop taking it for a couple of days so I won't build up immunity as another reviewer mentioned.

i only take 50 mg when the blues show up. it definitely does work like a charm. it works quick.. usually within an hour or so. i'd like to suggest users consider 'only' take as needed, as you would a valium. if you are depressed for a day.. and can't shake it via your own efforts, take the 5-htp. or for a week.. or whatever however long to get over the hump. stop taking it when you feel better, or at least start skipping days to lighten up and phase off it until you need it again. i have never taken it for any duration, but i have read about others that have developed a tolerance. this supplement is a gem.. and not something you may want to develop a tolerance for. you want it there working when you need it.. and using it as a preventative measure when you feel fine carries a risk of developing a tolerance and it losing its effectiveness for you

I'm In Shock: This Really Works I am here reviewing 5-HTP with the sincere hope that someone will read it, and try it. I had been feeling very depressed for the better part of a year and had made the decision to approach my doctor and request an anti-depressant. I was loathe to do so, as I'd been on Paxil as well as Wellbutrin and did not like the side effects.

But I had to do something: I could barely get up in the morning; making conversation with my three kids was a colossal effort, and the future appeared a grey wall infront of me. My confidence was low, I had very little energy, was not sleeping well, and basically woke up every morning gripped by some unknown dread that actually began to scare me. I felt like a terrible mother and began to seriously wonder if they'd all be better off without this irritable, depressed person looming over their lives everyday. Most disturbing was how anti-social I'd become; this stemmed from my depression which left me feeling worthless and unable to put on a happy face for people. It was better to be alone.

I began researching natural alternatives, and came upon a book about 5-HTP. I bought some at my health food store, along with a high-potency B-complex (100mg strength), and L-Tyrosine (500mg). I had already been taking the L-Tyrosine but learned that taking it all by itself was probably not very beneficial.

So, I started my new regime, taking 50mg of 5-HTP in the morning, along with my L-Tyrosine, and again before bed with my B-complex. I spent the next few days feeling very tired, so I now take 100mg of 5-HTP before bed. I have never slept so well since I was teenager. I wake up feeling great, relaxed, and refreshed. But here's the best part: I feel great. My mood has completely lifted. The other day I was tying my son's shoelace and noticed that I was singing. When my kids talk to me now, I'm laughing and participating. My confidence is up - I'm going out more and after 6 years as a full-time mother, I think I h

I had been suffering from anxiety and bouts of depression. The doctor put me on Efexor which worked great, but I stopped taking it after hearing about the horrible withdrawal symptoms. I got some withdrawal symptoms, worst of which was the rebound depression which made me feel like crying for hours on end most mornings.

I read about 5-htp online and started on 25mg and gradually worked up to 100mg over some weeks. I have found it to be a lifesaver for depression. It has basically taken away the constant sad feeling, I still tend to get depressed if I drink so I have taken a break from drinking to allow my serotonin levels to build up (as alcohol depletes these). I now only get a bit depressed now and then. It has helped a fair bit with anxiety as well, mainly because my head is clearer.
