Description

Zetia (generic name: Ezetimibe; brand name: Ezetrol) is an anti-hyperlipidemic medication which is used to lower cholesterol levels.

Zetia is used for treating high blood cholesterol along with a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet. It is also used to treat high blood sitosterol and campesterol along with diet therapy.

Zetia is unique in the way it helps block the absorption of cholesterol that comes from food.

Zetia acts by decreasing cholesterol absorption in the intestine.

Zetia may be used alone when other cholesterol-lowering medications are not tolerated, or together with statins (e.g. ezetimibe/simvastatin) when cholesterol levels are unable to be controlled on statins alone.

Recommendations

Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Take Zetia exactly as directed.

Zetia is usually taken once a day with or without food. Taking Zetia at the same time each day will help you remember to take it.

If you also take a bile acid sequestrant (eg, cholestyramine, colesevelam, colestipol), do not take it within 4 hours before or 2 hours after taking Zetia. Check with your doctor if you have questions.

Avoid drinking too much alcohol while you are being treated with Zetia. Alcohol can also increase your cholesterol levels. Continue to follow a cholesterol-lowering diet while taking Zetia.

Continue to use Zetia even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.

If you do miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember and continue taking it at the usual times. If it is nearly time for your next dose, leave out the missed dose, never take two doses at the same time to make up.

Keep your tablets at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture.

Precautions

Before taking Zetia, tell your doctor if:

you are allergic to any medicines;
you have or have ever had liver disease;
you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.

Zetia User Reviews

Zetia Reduces LDL About 18% For those without other risk factors such as smoking or high blood pressure, Zetia along with diet changes can help reduce mild cholesterol and LDL elevations. The literature says an 18% drop in LDL..... which is just what Zetia reduced LDL for me. It also says a 15% drop in total cholesterol......which is exactly how much mine dropped. Once a day..........zero side effects, without the potential liver problems of the statins, Provochol, Lipitor, etc.

Disappointed ....... After a bad time of it with Lipitor (muscle aches and weakness), I was hoping Zetia would be the one. I liked that it wasn't a statin and had different mode of action. However, after about 6 weeks I felt my usual osteoarthritis pain was getting worse again, plus I had blurry vision that made it impossible for me to read in the evening. So I stopped it. Turns out its effect on my cholesterol was mxed: Total 221 (from 276), HDL 38 (from 45), LDL 123 (from 160), Triglyc. 298 (from 357). Funny how my good cholesterol went down too. Also that triglyc. went down when I thought Zetia doesn't work on triglyc. Anyways, next thing I will be trying will be niacin.

Cholesterol always hovered around 260, tried eating better and working out and dropped over 50 pounds with no effect on cholesterol levels. Finally decided needed medication to solve the problem started taking Zetia and my cholesterol levels dropped to 168 and under, and that has been my highest since taking it which has been for over 3 years now. I have never noticed any side effects and since its absorbed in the stomach its not supposed to effect the liver. Based off my experience I would definitely recommend as an option.

not much good so far cholesterol level still 8+
