Description

Zithromax (generic name: azithromycin; brand names include: Azovid / Azee / Azotik / Azithral / Zithromac / Vinzam / Zmax / Sumamed / Zitrocin / Aziswift) is in a class of drugs called macrolide antibiotics.

Zithromax is prescribed for adults to treat certain mild to moderate skin infections; upper and lower respiratory tract infections, including pharyngitis (strep throat), tonsillitis, sinus infections, worsening of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and pneumonia; sexually transmitted infections of the cervix or urinary tract; and genital ulcer disease in men.

Zithromax is commonly used to treat chlamydia. Zithromax is also used to prevent infections by a bacterium called Mycobacterium Avium-intracellulare Complex (MAC) in some people.

In children, Zithromax is used to treat middle ear infection, pneumonia, tonsillitis, and strep throat.

Zithromax prevents bacteria from growing by interfering with their protein synthesis.

Recommendations

Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Take Zithromax exactly as directed.

Zithromax may be taken on an empty stomach or with food.

The dose will depend on your infection. The usual dose to treat Chlamydia is two 500 mg tablets taken as a single dose. For other infections Zithromax is usually taken once a day. Sometimes the dose is taken once a week. Your doctor will decide the right dose for you.

To clear up your infection completely, continue taking this medicine for the full course of treatment even if you feel better in a few days. Do not miss any doses. Taking this medicine at the same time each day will make it easier to remember.

If you are taking an antacid (e.g., Gastrogel, Mylanta), take it at least one hour before or two hours after your Zithromax dose. This will avoid any possible effect of the antacid on the absorption of Zithromax.

If you miss a dose of Zithromax and you are taking Zithromax for three days or longer, take it as soon as you remember (within a 24- hour period), then continue as normal. Do not try to make up for missed doses by taking more than one dose at a time.

Like many antibiotics, this medicine may decrease the effectiveness of your birth control pill. To prevent pregnancy, you may want to use an additional form of birth control.

Keep Zithromax at room temperature, away from heat and light.

Anonym: take a 2 month course of Zithromax, half a tablet daily, about twice a year to alleviate exacerbations of chronic Pseudomonas Auriginosa chest infection associated with Cystic Fibrosis. It works excellently in conjunction with a 2 week course of nebulised tobramycin (Tobi) to reduce symptoms and decrease sputum production. I believe one of its main actions is its anti inflammatory effect. Also I believe that it inhibits the ability of Pseudomonas to stick to the lungs. This is a great weapon in the arsenal against CF. Jacob: I started taking Tramadol about 3 months ago for chronic pain in my knee, hips and especially my lower back due to over 26 years in the military. It allows me to be relativly free from pain and capable of doing things around my yard. I have expienced no side effects. If I stop taking it for a couple of days the pain returns. Before taking tramadol I was limited to 15 to 30 minutes of work and then I would be done for a couple of days to recuperate.

Anonym: Used Zithromax to treat bronchitis. I had to take two rounds of the drug, either because it was a really bad infection, or because of my anatomical changes relating to gastric bypass surgery (malabsorption). IS APROPPIATE WHEN YOU HAVE HIGH ELASTASES The treatment that I am following includes taking Zithromax (Azytromicine) Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with a stomach protector consistent of probiotics during 4 months. Depending on your elastase levels, this could be prolongued a few more months.

The antibiotics are not prescribed as such in my case, they are used to reduce the intracellular inflammation given by my RNASE, Elastase and PKR, and indeed my symptoms have evolved favorably. I increased the number of good days significantly, but unfortunatelly when I stopped with antibiotics, I relapsed a few weeks later.

I may come back to them, but not just yet. Also I had some fungi infection despite of taking probiotics, which I treated with fluconazol, so now I am working more on recuperating the intestinal flora.

The treatment with certain antibiotics essentially of the group of the beta-lactámicos can be useful in cases of increase of elastasas, because indeed they have an inhibiting role on them. So having an active mycoplasma peumonia infection, is not the only reason to take this medication, there are more reasons as I just explained. In my case my Mycoplasma Infection was an old infection, but my elastase level was too high and afecting my RNASe.

A very frustrating thing of this illness is the combination of remission of symptoms periods followed by relapsing periods where the symptoms come back in a stronger way. It is very important not to overpass oneself limits, because normally when there is a remission of the symptoms, we tend to overdo physical and mental efforts, which leads us into a worse relapsing period with stronger symptoms. Once we fall into the relapsing period, we could expect to see ourselves in bed for a whole week.
